QUESTION: WHAT SHOULD I DO IMMEDIATELY AFTER STORM DAMAGE TO MY HOUSE?
ANSWER: After a home has sustained storm damage, severe incidental damage might occur, including moisture and mold. These issues can create a situation of escalating damage. What started as a few missing shingles can morph into a serious moisture issue in the roofing substrate materials and the attic underneath. Homeowners can have difficulty working with insurance adjustors when submitting a claim for damage. Insurance companies have differing policies and criteria for claims, making the process challenging for a novice homeowner. A professional contractor needs to have experience working with insurance companies, which can help you receive the best results with a submitted claim.
QUESTION: WHAT CAN BE DONE IF OUR ATTIC INSULATION GOT WET WHEN THE ROOF LEAKED WITH WATER DAMAGE FROM A ROOF LEAK?
ANSWER: The fluffy type insulation like fiberglass or cellulose will lose its R-value after it has gotten wet because it gets heavier and allows water to permeate other building materials (like the plywood, and wood framing as well as, the gypsum board). Typically, wet insulation should be discarded and replaced with new dry insulation. It’s always important to eliminate the source of the water damage before installing any new insulation or other materials.
QUESTION: OUR HOT WATER HEATER LEAKED AND FILLED OUR BASEMENT WITH A FEW INCHES OF STANDING WATER, SO WE ARE WONDERING IF NE NEED TO HAVE THE WALLS REMOVED AND REPLACED AFTER THIS WATER DAMAGE?
ANSWER: Not necessarily because there are times we are able to dry them and save them from needing to be replaced. Walls with insulation should be cut open at the bottom during water mitigation machine drying to avoid the formation of mold. We would need to assess the damages with our equippment to give an accurate answer as this is answered on a case-by-case basis.
QUESTION: HOW CAN A HOME BE SECURED AFTER STORM WATER DAMAGE OR FLOOD WATER DAMAGE?
ANSWER: If it is safe to do so, make sure, your electricity is turned off. If you can, it's a good idea to shut off main supply valves for water and gas. If your house has a security system, notify the security agency. Lock exterior doors and make sure windows are also locked. If it's not dangerous to do so, it's a good idea to take pictures to document your disaster damage and make notes.
QUESTION: IS IT POSSIBLE FOR ME TO CLEAN UP AND GET RID OF THE SOOT AND SMOKE AFTER A FIRE, TO REMOVE SOOY AND SMOKE DAMAGE ON MY OWN?
ANSWER: You could try, but in most cases we really wouldn’t recommend it as it could lead to additional damage if done incorrectly. For example, soot and fire extinguishing techniques use chemicals that react to your furnishings, upholstery, clothing, etc, and using standard cleaning methods will further damage your stuff! Another example is that regular dry cleaning of your clothes will ruin them. We work with companies who specialize in each type of fire damage repair to ensure that all of your belongings are restored as close to back to pre-fire condition as possible. If you’ve just had a fire, it's best to let professionals assess the damage, and restore your fire damaged property. Different kinds of smoke and soot residues require different kinds of cleaning solutions, and improper treatment can cause the damage to get worse and harder to repair, perhaps even ruining things that could have been cleaned if done properly the first time.
QUESTION: HOW DO I DETERMINE HOW MUCH WATER DAMAGE MY HOME MY HAVE?
ANSWER: It is hard to determine the extent of water damage without trained professionals with technologically advanced machines that can determine the full degree of water damage and where it has affected. Sometimes it can exist in the walls, behind cabinets, and underneath floors. There are special meters and instruments that help find hidden water and sources of the problem. Once the source is found, other specialized equipment can be used for the drying processes.
QUESTION:CAN YOU DIRECT BILL MY INSURANCE COMPANY?
ANSWER: Green Construction is not only a contractor, but a prior licensed insurance adjuster. We will work closely with your insurance company for emergency clean up and then repair. We will help get the most out of your coverage and help the repair process go as smoothly as possible.
QUESTION: HOW QUICKLY SHOULD THE WATER BE REMOVED?
ANSWER: As soon as possible! The faster the origin of the problem is found, the less damage that will result. If water is left for any length of time, microbial growth can begin to form and grow. Once microbial growth begins, remediation becomes an additional step to repair the damage, from dangers such as mold. The quicker the water can be extracted and the drying process starts lessens the amount and costs of damages.
QUESTION: IS IT OK FOR ME TO USE BLEACH TO KILL MOLD I FOUND BEHIND MY WALLPAPER AND/OR TO KILL BLACK MOLD AND OTHER TYPES OF MOLD?
ANSWER: Mold can be tricky and it's best to call a professional so that you and your family do no end up sick from mold exposure down the road when it comes back after home remedies do not kill mold. The use of a chemical or biocide that kills organisms such as mold (chlorine bleach, for example) is not recommended as a routine practice during mold cleanup. In most cases, it is not possible or desirable to sterilize an area; a background level of mold spores will remain - these spores will not likekly grow if the moisture problem has been resolved, but with improper treatment to get rid of mold and the reasons the mold exists in the first place, you will end up with a repeat problem. If you choose to try this on your own, be sure to ventilate the area and exhaust the air to the outdoors. Never mix cleaning solutions or detergents because toxic fumes could be produced creating lung damage or worse! Even dead mold may still cause allergic reactions in some people, so it is not enough to simply kill the mold, it must also be removed. We recommend calling a professional to discuss your options and permanently rid your home of this very serious issue.
QUESTION:WHAT IS SO DANGEROUS ABOUT MOLD?
ANSWER: Mold is mainly dangerous to your health because it can cause allergic reactions to serious illness, such as microscopic mold spores that are present in the air attaching to your lungs, developing serious life threatening concerns! It is more dangerous to infants, children, elderly people, pregnant women, and people with respiratory diseases, a weakened immune system, and those who suffer from allergies or asthma. The common reactions to mold are nasal stuffiness, eye irritation, shortness of breath, wheezing, and mold infections. Living in an area with high mold count could result in chronic respiratory conditions. If you suspect that you have mold in your home or business, please call a professional to remediate mold immediately!
QUESTION: WHERE DOES MOLD GROW?
ANSWER: Microbial growth can be found everywhere, both indoors and outdoors. Usually, mold is found in damp areas, such as the kitchen or bathroom, as well as in the outdoor environment in grass, leaf piles, hay, and mulch. Microbial growth usually results in homes because of some type of leak that causes standing water and then goes undetected or ignored, making the problems worse over time.
QUESTION: WHY ARE THERE SO MANY HORROR STORIES ABOUT BATHROOM REMODELING AND RENOVATIONS?
ANSWER: The main reason is that the bathroom is the room that people renovate or remodel most often. Secondly, they have to stand up to daily use, steam, water and mildew. But none of these is responsible for the nightmares many have experienced, heard about, or watched on TV. This basically comes down to the fact that the renovation was done poorly. QUESTION: WHAT ARE SOME WARNING SIGNS AND RED FLAGS TO WATCH OUT FOR WHEN HIRING A CONTRACTOR?
ANSWER: Don’t be seduced by the contractor who tries to convince you that all you need is a modest facelift. Though they may initially win you over because you are worried about your wallet, the cover up of underlying problems such as wet insulation, rotting drywall and code violating plumbing will drain your bank account before the job is even done! Focus on this reality check: #1) If your house is over twenty years old, it needs more than a facelift. #2) If you get 3 drastically different quotes, the lowest one is likely not being forthcoming with all the things that may need to be fixed. Take the time to have a thorough inspection of what you have and what is needed, and go over the quotes to compare apples with apples. The rule of thumb for bathrooms is that if tile need to be replaced, you’ve likely got other problems that need looking into. ANSWER: A good contractor provides quality input when you meet to discuss your plans. The good ones will help you realize your dreams without being unrealistic in how to get you there. What you want is the contractor who does a thorough inspection and demonstrates extensive knowledge of what is needed and what the options to get you what you want really are. Never assume that all contractors know the latest building technologies, products and code requirements and laws. You want the industry leader, not a follower. Visit our blog to help you with these decisions.

QUESTION:WHAT MAKES A KITCHEN REMODELING PROJECT MORE OR LESS EXPENSIVE?
ANSWER: Cabinets account for about half the total cost of the project and will have the greatest impact on your budget. They range in price considerably based on quality, the type of material they are made of, and whether they are stock (ready-made in specific sizes) or custom (produced specifically for your kitchen in whatever sizes are needed). The other big expense may be in solid surface counter tops, such as granite or quartz.
